SK Group Chair visits Taiwan to discuss AI chips with TSMC

Apr 11, 2025

Chey Tae-won, chairman of South Korea’s SK Group, visited Taiwan on Thursday to meet with executives from TSMC and other major players in the semiconductor industry. As global chip supply chains face mounting uncertainty due to tariffs introduced during the Trump administration, Taiwan remains a strategic hub as it houses leading semiconductor companies like TSMC. Chey was reportedly accompanied by officials from SK hynix during the trip.

This is Chey’s first visit to Taiwan since his last visit in June 2024. He is believed to have met with key figures in Taiwan’s information technology sector, including TSMC executives, to explore partnerships in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) semiconductors.

Industry watchers are closely monitoring whether the visit will lead to an expansion of back-end packaging collaborations between SK hynix and TSMC, while a potential meeting between Chey and TSMC Chairman Mark Liu is also drawing attention. Chey proposed building the foundation for an AI-powered future together during their previous meeting in June 2024 and the two companies agreed to deepen cooperation in the HBM field.

SK hynix signed a memorandum of understanding with TSMC in 2024 to strengthen joint development of HBM4 and packaging technologies. SK hynix overtook Samsung Electronics in DRAM revenue in the first quarter of 2024 to become the global leader for the first time in 33 years.

SK hynix is also scheduled to participate in the upcoming “TSMC 2025 Technology Symposium” in Santa Clara on April 23rd, 2025, where it plans to unveil advancements in HBM4 and advanced packaging technologies. https://pulse.mk.co.kr/news/english/11288859
